Strength and Conditioning for Contemporary Dancers

In this video one of our senior Exercise Physiologists Sami Gurdon gives insight into building strength for dancers. At START Training Brisbane we work with emerging and professional contemporary dancers on conditioning and injury prevention programs. Each dancer is assessed and their needs are assessed individually so that we are able to best prepare their bodies for longevity in their career.

Generally speaking the program addressing one or more of the following:

– injury prevention
– improving performance
– creating stronger posture and body lines
– addressing range of motion and mobility issues
– or improving body composition

We aspire to create strong athletic bodies that still look and move like dancers. We need to ensure that the strengthening we do does not cause them to gain too much muscle mass or decrease their flexibility so we work more towards things like attaining correct muscle engagement and patterning and improving movement efficiency and control.

We also often find ourselves working with up and coming dancers in all disciplines and ensure that they are well prepared to handle the increased workload whilst avoiding the array of overuse injuries and syndromes often experienced by dancers.
